A net zero future for PPSP

Leading the way to net zero

PPSP has been Leading the Way on Victorian waters since 1839. Today, we’re Leading the Way to a zero emissions future.

Our industry-leading decarbonisation plan has set PPSP on a course to reduce its emissions by implementing the following:

• The commissioning of Pilot Vessel Torquay, which boasts fuel-efficient dual Volva Penta engines and technology that reduces our greatest source of emissions – diesel fuel burn – by about 30 per cent. PV Torquay can be readily converted to bio-fuels when they become a viable alternative.

• Installing a 40kw solar panel and battery system on PPSP’s Queenscliff Pilot Station. The project was completed in April 2024.

• Transitioning our hybrid-electric vehicle fleet to fully electric vehicles that can be charged via the solar-battery system at the pilot station. By replacing its fleet of 10 vehicles, PPSP will eliminate the use of fossil fuels over an annual 250,000km travelled.

PPSP’s carbon footprint is already small, and we’re working to make it even smaller.

Port Phillip Sea Pilots (PPSP) has made a giant leap forward in the sustainability of pilot vessels with the arrival of its latest launch, PV Torquay.

Leading the way in efficiency, the PV Torquay is powered by dual-Volva Penta engines, and consumes around a third less fuel without compromising safety-critical speed and stability.

This trailblazing model is one of the most fuel-efficient on the water, thanks to the state-of-the-art-technology used by Victorian boatbuilders Hart Marine.

PV Torquay arrived at PPSP’s Queenscliff base last week following extensive sea trials. PV Torquay will enter service this week, helping connect Victorian businesses to markets in all corners of the globe.

As one of Victoria’s oldest businesses, PPSP has been leading the way in marine pilotage for the past 185 years, playing a pivotal role supporting the community. Today, that includes being first-line stewards of the marine environment, as PPSP aims to make its fleet of pilot launches amongst the greenest in the world.

Decarbonisation is an urgent priority for the international shipping industry and PPSP is proud to be leading the way in reducing emissions in marine pilotage, a vital link in global supply chain.

The arrival of PV Torquay build is the latest development in PPSP’s transition to net zero. The company has already installed solar panels on its heritage Queenscliff Pilot Station, as part of efforts to bring solar and batteries to all of its facilities.

PPSP is in the process of transitioning its current fleet of hybrid-electric cars to fully electric vehicles. By replacing its fleet of 10 vehicles, PPSP will eliminate the use of fossil fuels over an annual 250,000km travelled.

PV Torquay was developed in collaboration with boat manufacturer Hart Marine, marking the seventh partnership between the two Victorian owned and operated companies.

South Australia’s Flinders Ports has also thrown its support behind the project, highlighting the importance of industry collaboration in achieving net zero.
